Ana Ling Yuan, author of Between Grief and Grace

What inspires you to write?

What really inspired me to write was nature and love. I felt like it deserved to be on paper so other people can fall in love with nature and understand the complexities of love.

Why did you choose to write in your genre?

I think I write best in romance compared to any other genre.

Are you a full-time or part-time writer, and how does that affect your writing?

I am a part-time writer. I think it positively affects my writing. When I’m studying for my exams, I think about what I’m writing here and there, and it just feels so freeing because I rarely get writer’s block, and it’s so amazing, honestly.

What have you written so far?

I have written one book that’s Between Grief & Grace, a contemporary romance novel. I’m not entirely sure if my Mafia romance novel would count since it’s just the first draft, but yes.

Do you work with an outline or plot sketch, or do you prefer to let a general idea guide your writing?

All of the above. When I’m writing a new story, I’ll have the outline and the plot sketch, but at the same time, I just choose to let the general idea guide me. It’s not always that we are going to stick to the script, you know, sometimes when you’re writing, it’s like maybe this would be a better fit than what I have for the plot sketch or outline.

What role does research play in your writing?

It does play a huge role in my writing because I think it’s best to understand what you’re writing about before putting pen to paper. So when I’m writing fight scenes, I’m researching and looking at how my characters can evade or what technique would be good for this scene.

How long does it take you to write a book?

Ah, it truly depends on how motivated I am to write the book. Sometimes I can finish writing a book in three months, sometimes it takes longer.

Did you independently or “self” publish, or did you go the “traditional” publishing route, and why?

I “self” publish. I think it’s best if I’m in control of what I’m doing for now, without getting robbed or you know, people changing your story to make it more marketable when your original work was what you believed in. Would love to go to the traditional, the more I write.

How do you market or promote your books, and what strategies (e.g. social media, email, blog tours, in-person, etc.) have demonstrated the most success for you?

I market my books using social media, especially Facebook, where there’s a lot of traffic and a lot of willing people who would give your book a chance. I usually ask them to read it because it’s free, and I’d love it if they could support an author such as myself. I use threads as well, and it has shown some level of success.

What is your next project?

My next project is a Mafia Romance Book, and I’m really excited about it.

Tell us something unique about you.

I am left-handed!
