Indonesian author, Keefe R.D., sat down recently to discuss her novels and why she enjoys writing in the fantasy genre.
Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?
I always have this saying in my mind: “I want to write something that I would love to read!”
So yeah, I have always loved books about the fantasy genre, since I was a child. I think the fantasy genre is something that will always stay with us. It is timeless, and it [presents] a world we can run [to when] our stressful reality begins to drive us crazy.
Are you a full-time or part-time writer and how does that affect your writing?
I am a part-time writer for now because I took a freelance job as a designer and illustrator for a while. But I want to be a full-time writer someday!
Do you have a special time to write, or how is your day structured to accommodate your writing?
I can write anytime, when the place is comfortable, [and] as long as no one is watching my back.
Can you share with readers a little bit about your latest book?
This year I self-published two books. In January, [I published] The Salt Prejudice, and the latest book that I’ve published, in March, is Royal Arcanum, which is the first installment of seven in the series.
Royal Arcanum is a story about the self-discovery of seventeen-year-old Cathy Charlotte who always knew her mom was hiding a family secret: that she is the descendant of an Austrian royal family. Then, supernatural things start to happen, and she finally learns the existence of a hidden world and celestial beings outside our human reality. She realizes that there is more to this life.
What made you decide to sit down and actually start writing this book?
Since I truly love fantasy stories, why not start writing one? I do love everything that is going on inside my head; the scenes and dialogues play like a movie.
Tell us more about your main character. What makes him or her unique?
Cathy Charlotte is shy, smart, old-fashioned sometimes, but she isn’t your average girl. She doesn’t know her true potential until an angel comes to guide her through her journey and shows her how to unlock her psychic ability.
If your book was made into a movie, who would you cast?
I always picture a younger version of Brooke Shields as the main character, Cathy Charlotte. She looks exactly like her! And her mom, Haile Charlotte, looks similar to Jennifer Connelly. The white-haired angel, Sylvia Elle, looks similar to Elle Fanning because their flawless pale white skin is remarkably the same, and their platinum hair too!
What role does research play in your writing?
It’s very important to do a research, at least to make the setting seem real.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
It’s hard to focus when you’re not in the mood, and you’re [thinking about] other matters, or just lazy.
What do you like to read in your free time?
I like any fantasy genre, anything magical, peculiar, or even supernatural I will absolutely read it! But other than that, I love spiritual, motivational, and something creative in non-fiction books.
