Max Vayne, author of Charles and Her

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I realized I was one at heart when I was a kid. I got an assignment to write a story and I enjoyed it immensely. I then started writing my first book as well. I guess I have been since forever.

Do you have a special time to write, or how is your day structured to accommodate your writing?

I write at night. I’ve always felt night is more exciting, cool, and dangerous and therefore more likely to produce good ideas.

What have you written so far?

I have one book published, two other books in process and one series in process as well. Also, I have a collection of short stories that I might or might not decide to publish as well.

Do you work with an outline or plot sketch, or do you prefer to let a general idea guide your writing?

I’m a general idea kind of guy. Most of the time I think of a couple of interactions between characters, then that causes some backstory to be necessary and that moves the plot along. I cannot wait that long to start writing. I just do it.

How did you decide how to publish your books?

I was always thinking about stories in my head since I was a child. I would picture them and start adding characters, motivations, and twists. But one day, I forgot a major detail in this great story, and that made me very sad, so I decided to write my ideas so I couldn’t forget them. And one day I realized I loved doing it, and it would be a dream to do it for a living.

How do you feel about indie/alternative vs. traditional publishing?

I like self-publishing. For a very long time, only those born into money, or the business already had a chance. Alternative publishing has gotten rid of some of that nepotism and given the chance to millions of creative people to show their art.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

That terror that you feel. That everyone will hate your book, that your friends will laugh at it and that the whole world will tell you to quit will never go away. You just must face it, so you can do it now or in 10 years but don’t expect that anxiety to reduce. The only way forward is to face it.

Can you share with readers a little bit about your latest book?

The last one I started is about a noble lady whose entire life has been decided since birth. Because of this, she has done nothing but try to please others and play her role, and slowly start becoming more self-aware of this situation.

What made you decide to sit down and actually start writing this book?

I saw a great drawing of a woman on top of a horse, and she looked so cool I just made up a whole story for her named Charles and Her. Images tend to inspire me the most creatively.

Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

I love the unnamed woman. She is hilarious and ridiculous even in the scariest of situations despite having such a grim and dark profession as being a mercenary is.
